The Incident and Immediate Response
On November 16, around 12:15 AM, two fishermen, identified as Ujang Agus and Deni Setiawan, were fishing on the coral reefs off Cikeus Beach when they were caught in unexpectedly high waves. Eyewitness reports indicate that both men attempted to save themselves by swimming and clinging to the coral, but the powerful waves ultimately swept them out to sea.
In response to the incident, a joint search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched, involving personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the Indonesian National Police, and local volunteers. Sukabumi Basarna Posar Coordinator Suryo Adianto noted that the unpredictable weather posed significant challenges to the search efforts.
Challenges Faced by Rescue Teams
As of the second day of the search, approximately 50 personnel have been deployed to locate the missing fishermen. The operation is divided into two teams: one team is searching up to 4 nautical miles offshore using rubber boats, while the other is combing the beach area for about 2 kilometers.
The extreme weather conditions, characterized by high waves and strong currents, have made the search increasingly perilous. Authorities are urging local fishermen and beachgoers to exercise caution during this period of adverse weather, which is not uncommon in coastal regions during the rainy season.

The local community has rallied around the families of the missing fishermen, offering support and assistance during this difficult time. The Ciemas Police Chief, AKP DND Miharja, has emphasized the importance of safety measures for fishermen, particularly during rough weather conditions. He stated, 'We urge all fishermen to be vigilant and prioritize their safety by monitoring weather forecasts and avoiding fishing during severe conditions.'
